Avon Day
|
Avon Day was originally conceived as an event to promote town spirit
and interest in the community, while educating residents about Avon's wide
variety of service organizations and programs---all in an atmosphere of fun.
Proceeds from the event have been used to support local residents' needs through
either the Town, per se, or the Town's many non-profit organizations.
The event is endorsed by the Avon Town Council, supported by the Departments
of Recreation & Parks and Public Works. For the past eight years, Avon Day has
been sponsored by the Avon Chapter of UNICO National, a non-profit Italian-American
service organization that has served the local community for the past twenty years.
This year, for the first time, The Avon Volunteer Fire Department has joined us
as a co-sponsor.
The first Avon Day was held in May, 1982. Through the years, the event has evolved
and grown tremendously attracting between eight and ten thousand people. This year's
event will be held at the athletic field behind the Thompson Brook School.
Avon Day consists of food booths, entertainment, information booths for service
organizations and corporate booths. Funds raised through the event are used as
follows:
Taste of Avon - All proceeds go to the Town of Avon Special Needs Fund to help
Avon residents in need of financial assistance.
Individual Food Booths - All proceeds are returned to the local service
organizations operating the food booth, and in turn, are returned to community
members through such activities as scholarships, grants and donations.
Contributions, sponsorships, and other Avon Day fundraisers - Proceeds are used
to offset operational expenses associated with the event.
Despite its evolution, Avon Day's original concept has remained intact, improving
the quality of life within our town and enhancing its residents' understanding of
all that Avon has to offer. We will continue to do our best to support, enhance
and enjoy this traditional annual event.
